From The Founder
The origin of Kolhapuri Footwear dates back to 12th century when the King Bijjala of Karnataka and his Prime Minister Basavanna encouraged the production of Kolhapuri Footwear so as to uplift the cobbler community. According to historic records, Kolhapuris were first worn as early as the 13th century. Previously known as Kapashi, Paytaan, Kachkadi, Bakkalnali, and Pukari, the name indicated the village where they were made.
“It’s A 700-Year-Old Craft
The process and craft ranges back to the time of the kings and queens of 13th century. Kolhapuri Chappals were worn back then by the royal lineage and since then, the use of these chappals have become widespread. The craze has amplified among every generation and people from all walks of life and so has the demand. These Paytaans hail from different places from all over Maharashtra & each pair is unique in its own way.
Paytaan – Art Of Your Feet

While the whole handcrafted footwear industry is relying on antiquated methods, Paytaan has introduced limited automation in the process, thus making the process unparalleled. All the un-artistic and repetitive procedures have been shifted to machines, thus achieving more consistency and minimizing human errors. This gives us our artisans quality time to focus on the art they produce, that makes India proud worldwide.
